SEWAGE TREATMENT is a process of removing contaminants from wastewater, primarily from household sewage. It includes physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove these contaminants and produce environmentally safe treated wastewater (or treated effluent).
A by-product of sewage treatment is usually a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge, that has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or land application.
WATER TREATMENT METHOD
The treatment process envisaged is the “Modified Activated Sludge Process” with attached and suspended growth, aerobic, a biological system. This type of Bio-reactor is popularly known as Fluidized Bed, Aerobic Bio-Reactor (FBR) or Moving Bed Bio-Reactor (MBBR) which has a long sludge retention time since the packing media provides a much larger surface area for biological growth and the bio-flock gets attached to the packing media. The sludge produced in the conversion of dissolved organic matter in this process is comparatively lesser than the suspended growth system, due to long sludge retention time.Effluent Collection: The water from Toilets, Bathrooms, Kitchen will be collected and made available by gravity sewer main, to the STP, wherein it will be stored in an underground, Balancing tank in RCC construction. The tank will have adequate capacity to take up the flow fluctuations and to provide the required volume for continuous operation of the plant, even when there is less or no in-flow of raw sewage.
Oil & Grease Separator / Screen chamber: The effluent from the kitchen will have to be passed through an oil/grease catcher and then mixed with the sewer. The raw sewage shall be screened for removal of floating matter and coarse solid wastes. A necessary bar screen shall be provided in the inlet to the collection tank.
Equalization & Mixing: In order to keep the effluent fresh and to get uniformity, mixing is proposed through a perforated pipe grid connected to the discharge end of the effluent re-circulation/transfer pumps.
Biological Treatment: The sewage received in the Balancing tank will be pumped to the Biological Reactor at a constant rate. The bioreactor is called FBR (Fluidized Bed, Aerobic Bio-Reactor) or MBBR (Moving Bed Bio-Reactor) with a free-floating plastic media. The internal projected area of the packing is more than 350sq.m per cum volume.
For oxygen transfer, fine bubble air diffusers are provided with an aeration grid-connected to the main air header. Two Nos. (1W+1Sby) Rotary Twin lobe type Air Blowers deliver the required quantum of air to the system. With organic matter as food and oxygen for respiration, the aerobic bacteria start consuming the organic matter present in the water and the bacterial volume increases with the assimilation of the organic matter and gets attached to the plastic packing in the ‘attached growth’ system selected. The Bio-mass grows on the projected surface inside the hollow finned tubes and gets detached on aging.
Settling: The overflow from the Bioreactor is guided to a Conical shaped Clarifier tank to settle the biological (bacterial) sludge. The mixed –liquor enters from the bottom and moves up, while the suspended solids settle on the sloped bottom and drained out into a Sludge holding/digestion tank. The clear overflow water is collected through a pipe provided across the top surface of the Clarifier tank.
Sludge De-watering: The sludge consistency in the Clarifier hopper is only 1–2% w/v and this needs to be de-watered in order to get it as a cake. Hence the sludge is drawn through a set of Non-clog, Centrifugal pumps (1w+1sby) intermittently from the Sludge.
Holding / Digestion Tank and fed to Sludge Drying Beds or to a FILTER PRESS ( OPTIONAL) where the solids are retained and water is drained through Filtration Media. The de-watered sludge cake is removed periodically and used as manure for horticulture application.
Tertiary Treatment: In order to make the biologically treated, clear effluent obtained from the Clarifier over-flow fit for the beneficial application, it is chlorinated for disinfection and then fed to Pressure Filter Units charged with Graded Sand & Granular Activated carbon Media for removal of residual Suspended / Colloidal Organic impurities, Traces of Color & Odor, Pathogenic Bacteria, etc., before put into use for Toilet flushing, Gardening and other such secondary purposes.
